CONTENTS
The course introduces students to practical filmmaking, the history of documentary cinema, and to many of the films that have contributed to that history. The course will also survey the development of documentary film theory, all of this in parallel with the development of a documentary film production.
The course is a laborative production course aiming to blend theory and practice. The course will support the following thesis: films are texts that we read, and we should consider even academic writing as possibly taking shape in a cinematic form. Filmmaking, here, is intellectual production work. The film historical arc of the course will be broad, starting with the first films literally, proceeding through the development of the term documentary itself, and continuing through subsequent developments in the field up to more recent times. From the first meeting, the film project within the course will be developed in dialogue with the historical and theoretical components.
