AIM OF THE COURSE
On completion of the course, the student should be able to
- explain and discuss the functions and roles of mass media, journalism and communication in contemporary society,
- account for current theories and research in the field of mass media,
- account for the bases of theory of knowledge and be able to account for and compare the most common scientific methods,
- carry out an own research project, where theory and method are integrated and related to current research,
- compare and discuss differences between different scientific methods and theories,
- orally and in writing, discuss and defend a limited own research assignment,
- review, discuss and evaluate own and others' scientific texts,
- demonstrate an advanced critical approach to the knowledge field of media studies,
- demonstrate awareness of how personal values and positions influence assessment of media issues,
- under supervision, process and problematise own and others' approaches.
CONTENTS
The course consists of three modules:

In-depth Perspectives on the Media Society, 7.5 HE credits
This module provides an overview of and advanced studies in central theories and current research in media and communication studies. There are significant opportunities for individual choices.

Method Course, 7.5 HE credits
This module covers the basic qualitative methods of media and communication studies, for example (media) ethnography/participatory observation, interview, focus groups/reception analysis and various types of text and contents analyses. the module includes elements of theory of knowledge and methodology, but the emphasis is on the application of the methods on empirical material.

Thesis, 15 HE credits
The part comprises a well-defined research assignment. The thesis work integrates, in an independent way, the theoretical knowledge with method knowledge, with support from a supervisor. The work are presented, discussed and defended at seminars on classic way.
TEACHING
The teaching takes the form of lectures, seminars and group discussions. The students prepare individually and in groups for the lectures and seminars through studies of literature, group discussions and work with specific seminar assignments. As a part of the thesis work, supervision sessions with a teacher are included
EXAMINATION
The first two modules are examined through active participation in seminars and written work. The essay is examined at traditional essay seminars. Participation in the seminars is compulsory.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Completed courses in Media and communication studies 60 credits of which at least 52.5 credits passed (equivalent).
GRADING
A grade of Pass with Credit, Pass or Fail is given for the course
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
