| AIM OF THE COURSE |
On completion of the course, the student should, at a basic level:
- understand and be able to describe communication between people, based on a scholarly and theoretical frame of so called face-to-face interaction.
- understand and be able to account for an interactional perspective on communication and be able to discuss differences between this point of view and a view on communication as transfer.
- be able to describe and apply a number of socio-psychological concepts for interaction between people
- understand and be able to account for the importance of language, gestures and context for people's verbal and non-verbal interplay. |
| CONTENTS |
| The course deals with theories of communication and research about face-to-face interaction, as well as a number of socio-psychological concepts related to communication between people. Different aspects of communication are highlighted with emphasis on both verbal and non-verbal communication, and the importance, joint construction, reciprocity, negotiation and problematic communication of language and gestures. Based on empirical research, interaction in different communicative contexts is discussed. |
| TEACHING |
| The course consists of lectures and seminars. The students prepare individually for lectures through literature studies, as well as individually and in groups for seminars, through literature studies, group discussions and work with specific seminar assignments. |
| EXAMINATION |
The course is examined through active participation in compulsory seminars and through written, individual assignments.
Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.
Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades. |

| Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division. |
