On completion of the course, the student should be able to: - account for the everyday meaning and everyday management of health and illness - account for how personal meaning and personal management are shaped by social and cultural circumstances - describe how social scientific theory and concept formation can be utilised to gain a deeper understanding of health and illness as socio-cultural phenomena - analyse and discuss the above-mentioned conditions in speech and writing - independently search and use relevant references for questions linked to health, illness and everyday life - demonstrate elementary skills to theoretically analyse empirical material. |

The course intends to give the student an increased understanding of health and illness as social and cultural phenomena, in contrast to a medical meaning and practice. The course highlights the personal, social and cultural dimensions of health and illness. The following specific themes are covered: the phenomenology of the body, everyday ideas of health and illness, everyday health strategies, to fall ill and to ask for help, the individual's experiences of strategies for treatment of long-term illness, compliance to medical advice and instructions, and public attitudes to care, nursing and medical science. An elementary overview of general social science perspectives of relevance to the aims of the course is also provided, as well as an overview of qualitative analysis according to the Grounded-Theory approach. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

The course consists of lectures and seminars. On the basis of the compulsory literature, the student formulates questions that are discussed in groups at the following lecture. Continuously during the course and in preparation for the final essay, the student collects and analyses a readily available empirical material of relevance to the themes of the course. The course is examined continuously through active participation in the seminar assignments and lectures, and through a written mini essay based on own analyses. Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination. Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades. |
