| AIM OF THE COURSE |
On completion of the course, the student should be able to show knowledge of: major tendencies in the 20th century history of medical ethics and the context that gave rise to contemporary bioethics, including bioethical theories, feminists and postcolonial criticisms of these theories.
After the course the student should be able to critically examine and discuss bioethical issues. |
| CONTENTS |
| The course Global Bioethics presents a selected number of bioethical theories, bioethical concepts and tools for analysis of bioethical issues. The course explores and examines traditional bioethical theories, recent feminist criticisms, postcolonial and other major kinds of criticisms of these theories. It explores national and international policies related to the use of gene technologies. Topics for discussion may include ethical issues in reproductive technologies, embryonic stem sell research and therapeutic and reproductive cloning. |
| TEACHING |
| Lectures, extensive reading lists, individual work and group discussions at seminars. Language of instruction: English. |
| EXAMINATION |
Active participation in weekly seminars and a individually produced discussion paper by each student.
Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.
Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades. |
| ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS |
Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree/kandidatexamen (equivalent for example a professional degree) of at least 180 ECTS credits, including a 15 ECTS credit degree paper or equivalent. All applicants must show in-depth studies for at least one year in a field relevant for the course such as sociology, history, philosophy, epidemiology, public health, and ethics. Studies in medical and natural sciences may be accepted, if considered a relevant background for the course.
Documented knowledge of Engelska B"; i.e. English as native language or an internationally recognized test, e.g. TOEFL (minimum scores: Paperbased 575 + TWE-score 4.5, internetbased 90 TWE-score 20), IELTS, academic (minimum score: Overall band 6.5 and no band under 5.5), or equivalent. |

| The course is graded according to the ECTS grading scale A-F |
| CERTIFICATE |
| Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division. |
