AIM OF THE COURSE | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
On completion of the course, the student should be able to: - describe, analyse and critically review different scientific theoretical specialisations and research methods within pedagogy - plan the design and structure of scholarly studies, concerning the design of data collection tools, choice of method for collection, processing and analysis of information - use statistical methods for processing and analysis of numerical information and use qualitative methods for processing and analysis of verbal information - review and evaluate research considering quality aspects and ethical considerations - carry out an empirical and/or theoretical scientific study of a problem in the field of pedagogy - in writing, formulate, describe, analyse, critically review and discuss a chosen problem in a systematic way - orally discuss and defend a scientific work - critically review, evaluate and discuss scientific work |

Education is a scientific discipline that addresses the influence processes through which people are formed and transformed in different social contexts during life. The course comprises two modules: Research Methodology, 15 HE credits (Forskningsmetodik) This module covers the work process of research or diagnostic work in behavioural and social sciences research. The focus is on formulation of research issues and different scientific perspectives/positions and their consequences for the research planning, data collection (e.g. with questionnaires, interviews and observation), processing and analysis of both numerical and verbal information and reporting. The techniques for processing and analysis that are covered are quantitative methods for description, for determination of statistical relationships, for hypothesis tests and qualitative methods for processing and analysis of verbal information. Quality aspects of research in the behavioural and social sciences, as well as ethical aspects are also covered. Bachelor's Essay in Education, 15 HE credits (Kandidatuppsats i pedagogik) A cohesive work in pedagogy is planned, carried out, analysed and presented in the course. The work is structured as a degree project in education. The focus of the course is on implementation and writing of the degree project on the basis of relevant theorising and previous research. |

The teaching takes the form of lectures, seminars, group work and supervision. Apart from scheduled time, the students are expected to study independently, individually and/or in groups. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
EXAMINATION | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The course is examined in written and oral form. Participation in the seminars and group work is compulsory. An essay should also be presented and defended orally at an open seminar. The student also should publicly discuss other essay and participate actively in at least further three seminars. Detailed information can be found in the separate course instruction. Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination. Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades. |

Admission to the course requires, apart from satisfaction of the general entry requirements, passing grades in Pedagogy 1, 30 HE credits and Pedagogy 2, 30 HE credits, or other courses equivalent to 60 HE credits in pedagogy. |
