SYLLABUS
Normative Theories of International Relations, 7 ECTS Credits

AIM OF THE COURSE
On completion of the course, the student should be able to
- display good knowledge of major traditions of normative international thought, with an emphasis on the political philosophy of international relations,
- demonstrate an awareness of normative implications of international political relations and institutions,
- be conversant with the major theoretical approaches to the subject.
CONTENTS
The course covers the following areas:

- Theories of International Justice
- Ethics in International Politics
- The Normative Character of International Orders and Institutions
TEACHING
Teaching is by means of lectures, to provide an overview of the readings and issues at hand and seminars, which allow further possibilities for reflection and discussion. Students are also expected to actively participate and take responsibility for their studies through individual reading and analyses of books, journal articles, internet sources through library studies, and through discussions and debates. Language of instruction: English.
EXAMINATION
The course is examined through a combination of seminar contribution and written examination.



Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

In-depth study of at least 90 ECTS credits (3 semesters of full-time study) in the major subject is required, including a paper corresponding to approximately 10 weeks of study (15 ECTS).
The programme provides advanced level studies for students of political science, economics, history, sociology, and other social sciences as well as for students with other disciplinary backgrounds who can demonstrate an ability to develop their potential in the topic.
GRADING
The course is graded according to the ECTS grading scale A-F
