| AIM OF THE COURSE |
| After having passed this course, the student will have acquired a deeper critical and analytical outlook on political issues and phenomena. This is expressed by the student being acquainted with, and capable of arguing for and against, different standpoints of philosophy of science, and in this light, to reflect on the prospects and limits of political science. In addition, the student will have acquired deeper knowledge of theoretical perspectives and empirical conditions with reference to one of the course’s optional topics. The student is capable of planning, conducting, and presenting a scientific inquiry of politics with a relevant application of theory. The student demonstrates understanding of his or her work’s contribution to the chosen field of inquiry, comprehends the nature of the work from the viewpoint of philosophy of science and how this affects character of discourse and results, and is able to reflect on his or her own work as well as others with regard to strategies of presentation and textual organization. |
| CONTENTS |
Methods of Political Science, 7,5 ECTS Credits
This course expands earlier acquired knowledge of methods in political science by focusing on the problem of knowledge in political science, in a context of philosophy of science. Particular attention is paid to developing a self-conscious, reflective attitude to strategies of presentation and textual organization. Illustrating examples and exercises plays an import role in the learning process.
Optional Course, 7,5 ECTS Credits
This course offers a choice of topical issues in political science research. The stock of optional topics reflects current staff competence and research interests, and is changes continuously. A list of available course alternatives can be obtained at the department.
Thesis, 15 ECTS Credits
This course entails planning, conducting and defending a scientific inquiry, and opposing another student’s work. The thesis may be authored by one student or in collaboration between two students.

| TEACHING |
The course offers lectures which introduce and develop the content of the course. Lectures are complementary to the literature. Seminars are an important aspect of the learning process and provide opportunities for mutual, critical discussions which develop attitudes and skills. Students are expected to be well prepared for lectures and to have completed assigned preparations for seminars. Students are expected to read and take in the literature independently and/or in self-organized reading groups. In regard to the thesis part of the course, teaching primarily takes the form of tutorials, involving one student or a small group, and seminars, in particular the concluding examination seminar. As for seminars, student’s are expected to be well prepared for tutorials and (if a group is involved) to be ready to in dialogue deliver constructive criticism on other student’s work.
Activities which constitute elements of examination are mandatory.

| EXAMINATION |
Methods of political science is examined all through this part of the course by means of written assignments and active participation in seminars. Optional course is examined through a written, individual home examination, and active participation in seminars. An examinator may, depending on the number of students or in consideration of the character of the subject matter of the course, provide for individual, oral examination. Thesis is examined through presentation and defence of a thesis, and by opposing another student’s work in an examination seminar.
Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.
Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades. |
| ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS |
Political Science 1 and 2 completed; Political Science 3, with at least 22,5 ECTS Credits passed (equivalent). |

| The course is graded according to the ECTS grading scale A-F |

| Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division. |
