AIM OF THE COURSE
On completion of the course, the student should be able to
- use advanced knowledge of current sociological theories on the organisation and development of present-day society,
- use conceptual tools to carry out analyses of social phenomena,
- independently carry out and integrate analyses of social phenomena based on a macro and micro perspective,
- critically compare and reflect on sociological theories,
- account for the importance of general science-philosophical and methodological considerations for qualitative methodological thinking,
- use advanced knowledge about the most common qualitative data collection methods and about qualitative analysis strategies,
- critically read and reflect on sociological studies that are based on qualitative methods,
- independently carry out and report a sociological research study.
CONTENTS
Advanced Sociological Theory, 7.5 HE credits (Fördjupad sociologisk teori)

In this module, current sociological theories on the organisation and development of present-day society are covered. The models of explanation and analyses of social phenomena that are covered in this course are analysed on both macro and micro level.

Qualitative Research Methods, 7.5 HE credits (Sociologisk metod med kvalitativ inriktning)

After an introduction to science-philosophical and methodological starting points, this course covers the most important qualitative data collection strategies and the central elements in descriptive qualitative analysis and qualitative analysis with theory-generating ambitions.

Thesis, 15 HE credits (Uppsats)

In this module, the students should, mainly in pairs, write a thesis that is based on research and theorising and select relevant analysis and data collection methods for the research issue. The thesis should satisfy the theoretical, methodological and dispositional requirements that are set for this level. The thesis should contain a reflecting discussion and follow the formality rules that are set by the supervisor and the examiner.
TEACHING
The teaching takes the form of lectures, independent work, in groups or individually, compulsory presentations and active participation in seminars. Supervision is also included, in groups and individually. Apart from the scheduled time, the students are expected to work independently, both individually and in groups.
EXAMINATION
The examination formats vary, depending on the planning of the different modules. Apart from active participation in compulsory seminars, a take-home examination is included as an examination format. The essay is presented and defended at a seminar. The students should also publicly discuss another essay and participate actively in at least two additional essay seminars.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Passing grade in Sociology, basic course comprising 30 HE credits, and completed Sociology, continuation course with at least 22.5 HE credits approved, which should include Quantitative Research Methods, 7.5 HE credits, and Essay, 7.5 credits (or the equivalent).
GRADING
A grade of Pass with Credit, Pass or Fail is given for the course
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
