AIM OF THE COURSE
On completion of the course, the student should be able to
- use classical macrosociological theories and concepts,
- use classical and modern microsociological theories and concepts,
- account for current social phenomena based on theories presented in the course,
- interpret the structures of everyday life and the communication and interplay between individuals and groups,
- formulate a scientific study with an emphasis on design, selection process and data collection techniques,
- become familiar with different schools of thought in methodology and science theory,
- produce individually in writing and at seminar defend a smaller report within one of the sociology knowledge - and application fields.
CONTENTS
Macrosociological Theories I, 7.5 HE credits (Makrosociologiska teorier I)

In this module, basic macrosociological theories and concept learning are covered, with an emphasis on classical theories and concepts. In the course, these theories are used to understand current social problems.

Microsociological Theories I, 7.5 HE credits (Mikrosociologiska teorier I)

In this module, basic microsociology is covered, mainly with an emphasis on classical theories, but also on modern theories and concepts. In the course, these theories are used to understand the structures of everyday life and the communication and interplay between individuals and groups.

Basic Research Methods, 7.5 HE credits (Elementär sociologisk metod)

In this module, the sociological research process is introduced, with an emphasis on different methodological and science theory perspectives. The main focus is on elementary design, selection processes and data collection techniques. The module includes parts where the student may test different scientific methods in practice.

Applied Sociology, 7.5 HE credits (Specialkurs)

In this module, the students should in writing produce and orally defend a smaller report within one of the knowledge and application fields of sociology.
TEACHING
The teaching takes the form of lectures, individual work and group work, compulsory presentations and active participation in the seminars. Also included is practical proficiency training in elementary scientific methods, both orally and in writing. Apart from the scheduled time, the students are expected to study independently, individually or in groups.
EXAMINATION
The examination formats vary, depending on the planning of the different modules. Apart from compulsory seminars and written assignments, the examination includes a take-home examination and a written examination, as well as presentation and defence of an own report and a review of another report at the examination seminar.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

GRADING
A grade of Pass with Credit, Pass or Fail is given for the course
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
