AIM OF THE COURSE
On completion of the course, the student should be able to
- reflect on basic development theories,
- account for causes to why the majority of the world's poor are concentrated in Africa, Asia and Latin America,
- describe and analyse, with a focus on poverty, the development opportunities of three continents: Africa, Asia and Latin America,
- demonstrate knowledge of the impact environment, gender equality and democracy issues have on the general development process,
- demonstrate an understanding of the role of culture and religion in the development efforts in these countries,
- account for the role of the three continents and its countries in the globalisation process.
CONTENTS
Apart from an introduction to development theories and theories of poverty, the following issues are studied during the course:
- Proposed, implemented and the results of political, economic and social solutions.
- The role of the environment, gender equality and democracy issue in these solutions.
- The role of culture and religion in the development efforts in these countries.
- The role of these continents and its countries in the globalisation process.
TEACHING
The teaching takes the form of lectures that cover central concepts, theories and instruments, and seminars where the students, in small groups, have the opportunity i) to exercise presenting and reviewing the work of different authors and organisations, ii) to ventilate/publicly discuss studies and reports of their own and others based on an analysis of a country from the three continents and iii) to develop their seminar technique.
EXAMINATION
Active and compulsory participation in seminars. Writing of a report in the form of a group assignment. Written examination.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

GRADING
A grade of Pass with Credit, Pass or Fail is given for the course
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
