AIM OF THE COURSE
On completion of the course, the student should be able to
- apply knowledge of geographic theory and the development of ideas in the subject,
- demonstrate advanced skills in geographic methods
- evaluate and review scientific statements critically
- independently structure and carry out a scientific study and thereby collect, analyse and present a larger material and present the work in an essay
- account for implementations of geographic theories and methods, illustrated by questions regarding water and regional development in different parts of the world.
CONTENTS
Theory and Method 7.5 HE credits
General and geographic theory of knowledge and geographic history of science. Methods and models for the analysis of spatial data and spatial structures. Regions as scientific study objects. Regional and global development processes. Interregional relationships and dependencies.

Water and Regional Development, 7.5 HE credits
Water need, water presence and welfare development from a global, national, regional and local perspective. The importance of water for the environment and health. Water as a power factor. Models for regulation and control of the water use. Coordinated water administration (EU directive). Drainage area based analyses of land-water relations.

Essay 15 HE credits
A larger independent scientific work based on geographic issues, theories and methods. The results are presented in an essay that is covered in a seminar.
TEACHING
The teaching takes the form of lectures, seminars, exercises, supervision and field trips. All seminars and exercises are compulsory. The students should actively and at their own responsibility profit by the contents of the reading list, accomplish all practical assignments and participate actively in seminars. On the basis of individual supervision, the student should accomplish a larger independent written work (essay). The student should defend the work and critically review another student's work at an essay seminar.
EXAMINATION
The course is examined continuously through the following examination forms: take-home examination, essay seminar and participation in compulsory parts and carrying out related assignments.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Passing grade in Geography basic course and at least 22.5 HE credits approved, including an essay comprising 7.5 HE credits, in Geography continuation course (or the equivalent).
GRADING
A grade of Pass with Credit, Pass or Fail is given for the course
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
