AIM OF THE COURSE
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- identify, structure and analyse geographic issues within different application fields
- independently write a larger academic paper with advanced analysis and presentation of complex problem areas.
CONTENTS
Geographic Theory and Method 7.5 HE credits
Advanced study of geographic theory and method knowledge within disciplines relevant to the subject. Analysis and critical review of scientific work. Scientific conflicts.

Optional advanced study 7.5 HE credits
Alternative A gives the student opportunity for individual study of geographically relevant scientific literature. The literature is established in consultation with the examiner. The literature can thereby be established to have the module act as basis for the following thesis course.

Alternative B gives the student opportunity, with permission from the examiner, to read an appropriate course with geographic relevance, comprising 7.5 HE credits, at the equivalent level.

Essay 15 HE credits
An independent advanced scientific work, based on geographic issues, theories and methods. The results are presented in an essay that is covered in a seminar.
TEACHING
The teaching takes the form of lectures, seminars, exercises and tutoring. All seminars and exercises are compulsory. The examiner may grant exemption from compulsory parts if there are special reasons. The students should actively and at their own responsibility profit by the contents of the reading list, accomplish all practical assignments and participate actively in seminars. On the basis of individual supervision, the student should accomplish a larger independent written work (essay). The student should defend the work and critically review another student's work at an essay seminar.
EXAMINATION
The course is examined continuously through the following examination forms: take-home examination or independent oral test, essay seminar, where the students should defend their own work and publicly discuss other students' essays, as well as participation in compulsory parts and carrying out the assignments related to them.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Passing grade on Geography basic course, 30 HE credits, and Geography continued course, 30 HE credits, and at least 22.5 HE credits approved on Geography in-depth course (or the equivalent). In addition to the above, documented knowledge in Swedish and English is required, equivalent to the general entry requirements for first-cycle studies.
GRADING
A grade of Pass with Credit, Pass or Fail is given for the course
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
