AIM OF THE COURSE
After having successfully completed this course, the student should have attained the ability to encompass the meaning of trends and patterns in the emerging ’new economic geography’.
The student should be able to
- understand and explain underlying causes and explanations of trends and patterns
- understand, explain, and use key strategic concepts that are related to supply chain activities in business processes
- accomplish the ability to broaden the understanding of the future implications and alternatives that may be related to current business strategies and activities
- connect and contrast research findings with real life situations, both current and possible future ones
- integrate knowledge gained through reading, discussions, experiences and cases, and express this orally as well as in writing
CONTENTS
The aim of the course is to introduce, develop, and strengthen the students understanding of the challenges and opportunities that firms face in their immediate and long-term business perspectives. It will utilize real life illustrations, in conjunction with applied and established theoretical models, to provide a comprehensive and strong foundation on which students can broaden their knowledge of the way firms engage in business activities in today’s competitive business environment. In doing so, it will draw upon established business literature concerning the topic of business strategy and organizational structure. In addition to this, it will highlight how firms configure and coordinate their business tasks and activities, thereby providing a deepened understanding of the relationships between tasks and outcomes associated with a business activity. It will also introduce the students to the influence of environment on the strategic business process.
TEACHING
The course is designed to encourage active participation and the students are involved in various forms of interactive learning situations. The basic learning pillars are
- interactive lectures, complemented by individual reading to introduce the students to the research areas and lay a theoretical foundation
- practical exercises, such as role-plays, to provide experiences of some of the topics covered in the course
- paper-writing and seminars, where the students step-by-step will apply what they have learned during lectures and reading to show their ability to analyse companies business processes and propose reasonable and relevant solutions to problems in these areas

By completing this course, the students will have experienced first hand
- working in culturally diverse teams
- compiling and presenting the outcome of an assignment, orally as well as in writing
- having to plan for and coordinate many simultaneous tasks
- giving and taking constructive feedback
EXAMINATION
The course may be examined through a number of exercises that are spread out over the duration of the course.

A larger portion of assessment credits can be acquired through the seminar papers and the individual written exam. Detailed information about the examination can be found in the course’s study guide.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must, by the closing date for application, hold a bachelor's degree/kandidatexamen (equivalent for example a professional degree) of at least 180 ECTS credits, in Business Administration or Economics with at least 90 credits (3 semesters of full-time study) in the subject of Business Administration, including a 15 ECTS credit degree paper or equivalent.

Documented knowledge of English equivalent to "Engelska B"; i.e. English as native language or an internationally recognized test, e.g. TOEFL (minimum scores: Paper based 575 + TWE-score 4.5, and internet based 90), IELTS, academic (minimum score: Overall band 6.5 and no band under 5.5), or equivalent.
GRADING
The course is graded according to the ECTS grading scale A-F
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
