AIM OF THE COURSE | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The aim of the course is to enhance students' capabilities to act and work in contemporary and future organizations. A course ambition is to educate discerning consumers of strategic thought, i.e. students able to reflect upon fads and fashions and achievements of management research and writings. On completion of the course the students will be able to: - reproduce central strategic concepts and thoughts as well as the development of the field of strategic management. - ilustrate and explain differences and similarities between major ways of strategic thinking. - make use of models and concepts - differentiate between and select appropriate theories and models for different situations - compare, relate and synthesize thoughts and elements from different schools of strategic thinking. - evaluate and make judgements about strategies and ideas on strategy. |

Classic and Contemporary Views, 15 ECTS credits The course contains both classic and contemporary thoughts on strategy. The classic views represent the canon of the field of strategy and they include models and concepts that students of strategy are expected to know. In the course this inevitable heritage of theories and models is complemented with more contemporary ideas on strategy which also serve as a vehicle for challenging some of the classic ideas. In the course the following aspects will be dealt with: - competition and competitive advantage - value creation - innovation - firms' and organisations' inner and outer contexts - industry analysis - processes of strategy formulation, implementation and strategic change - internationalization of firms and strategies. Thesis, 15 ECTS-credits Students are to choose, delimit and write on a thesis subject in pairs within the area of business administration. To provide support for the thesis there will be a series of seminars comprising a number of working seminars where students' theses are presented and discussed, as well as a number of seminars on science and method, which are integrated with the previous master's degree course. |

The course consists of a combination of assignments, projects, readings, seminars and lectures. Student activity is a presupposition. The students write the thesis in pairs under the guidance of a supervisor. To support the process there are a series of working seminars where the students thesis are presented and discussed as well as a number of seminars on science and method. The course will be examined through a combination of individual and group assignments. The thesis is to be presented and defended at a seminar. Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades. |

The student must have completed Business Administration 1, 30 ECTS credits (20 points) and Business Administration 2 30 ECTS credits (20 points). The student must also have passed at least 22,5 ECTS credits (15 points) of Business Administration 3 30 ECTS credits (20 points). Further the requirements are that the student have completed at least 60 ECTS credits (40 points) in other academic subjects. Documented knowledge of English equivalent to “Engelska B” is required, or an international proficiency test e.g. TOEFL, minimum score 550/213. |
