On completion of the course, students should be able to: - explain theories, and problems within the field of environmental, animal and biomedical ethics, - analyse problems in environmental, animal and biomedical ethics, - argue for a standpoint of their own regarding a few issues in environmental, animal and biomedical ethics, - demonstrate an open and critical attitude to positions and arguments in environmental, animal and biomedical ethics. |

CONTENTS | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
This course gives an overview of bioethics in a broad sense, that is, the study of ethical issues raised by the life sciences and health care. It presents different views on environmental issues like sustainability and climate change, and different standpoints on using animals for food and scientific experimentation. It also focuses on issues in biomedical ethics such as genetic testing and end-of-life decisions. In the course, students read and analyse texts, participate in group work, write papers and are actively involved in seminar discussions. In addition, lectures are offered. Work with web resources and visits at workplaces outside the university may also be provided. Homework and independent study are a necessary complement to the course. Active participation in seminar discussion is expected of the students. The course is examined by writing a paper. Students who have failed an examination are normally allowed to retake it on two additional occasions, one of which should be arranged shortly after the first examination. Detailed information about the examination can be found in the course’s study guide Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination. Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades. |

At least one year of full-time undergraduate studies. Documented knowledge of English equivalent to Engelska B/Engelska 6; i.e. English as native language or an internationally recognized test, e.g. TOEFL (minimum scores: Paper based 575 + TWE-score 4.5, and internet based 90), IELTS, academic (minimum score: Overall band 6.5 and no band under 5.5), or equivalent. |
