AIM OF THE COURSE

On completion of the course, the student should be able to: - demonstrate knowledge and skills in a central discipline or problem area of theoretical philosophy - demonstrate knowledge with central analytical-philosophical theorising - demonstrate advanced knowledge of the history of theoretical philosophy in the 20th century - account for some classical work of a general theoretical-philosophical interest - demonstrate skills, within the scope of established concept formation and existing discussion, to examine a philosophical question

CONTENTS

Central Discipline, 7.5 HE credits This module covers a central current problem area in theoretical philosophy. It may, for example, be philosophy of mind, linguistic philosophy, philosophy of science or epistemology. The examiner selects the field that will be covered. In this problem area, the student should become familiar with the most important problems and the essential contributions to a current debate in the subject. The emphasis will mainly be on contributions from the 20th century. A selection of questions from the chosen central discipline is discussed on the basis of knowledge of originally formulated philosophic positions. Theoretical Philosophy Classics, 7.5 HE credits In this module, the students perform an in-depth study of a classical central work in theoretical philosophy. The chosen work is also studied through modern comments. Analytical History of Philosophy, 7.5 HE credits In this module, the student should gain a more advanced overview of the history of theoretical philosophy. Modern tools to interpret and cover older philosophic texts are exercised and used. Original texts and commentary texts are read in parallel. Through the design of the course, the student in this module should also acquire knowledge of historical works that have been essential for the development of modern philosophy. Essay, 7.5 HE credits The student selects a subject preferably in philosophy of science or epistemology. The essay should demonstrate independent elements, for example through interpretation and assessment of arguments. The essays are discussed in seminars.

TEACHING

The course work mainly consists of independent literature studies. In addition, lectures, seminars and exercises will be added. The latter are intended to connect to the practical assignments that the student carries out as own work in addition to the literature studies. The seminar sessions are compulsory and in all cases imply work that should be carried out in advance.

EXAMINATION

The courses are examined both through an individual written essay and through an individual written examination and written assignments. Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination. Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

At least 22.5 HE credits approved from Basic Course in Theoretical Philosophy, or the equivalent, is required for admission to the course.

GRADING

A grade of Pass with Credit, Pass or Fail is given for the course

CERTIFICATE

Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.

COURSE LITERATURE

The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.

OTHER INFORMATION

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus. The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
