AIM OF THE COURSE
On completion of the course, the student should:
- have acquired knowledge to describe, analyse and discuss the different study objects of the history of art independently,
- have in-depth qualifications to be able to work in subject-oriented research environments,
- demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of the subject,
- have displayed advanced ability to formulate himself or herself by independently writing an academic paper and publicly discussing an essay orally.
CONTENTS
Theory and Method, 7.5 HE credits (Teori och metod)
The part of the course includes a general overview of art historical theory and method. Different theories of the nature of art and concepts such as interpretation, truth and meaning in aesthetic contexts are also covered,

In-depth Reading, 7.5 HE credits (Fördjupningskurs)
Reading course comprising art theoretical literature chosen in consultation between the student and the supervisor. The course is examined in group seminars.

Thesis, 15 HE credits (Uppsats)
This module comprises writing an essay on which qualifying requirements are set regarding research documentation, independent and critical use of materials and precision in the practical implementation. Critical oral review constitutes a compulsory part of the module. Bibliographic orientation and is included in the module, as well as supervision in the technique of the essay writing.
TEACHING
During the course, teaching takes the form of lectures where the teacher presents knowledge that suits the reading list contents. The course also includes seminars, group tuition and supervision, where, within the framework of the student's efforts, preparations for the discussions, studies of the course literature, critical review on other students' essays and leading seminars are included as are compulsory parts.
EXAMINATION
The modules are examined separately through take-home examinations or written and group assignments, and through active participation in compulsory parts. The examination of the thesis course includes thesis work and a compulsory critical review assignment.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Admission to the course requires a passing grade in History of Art, basic course, completed History of Art, in-depth course with at least 22.5 HE credits approved (or the equivalent), i.e. including the thesis
GRADING
A grade of Pass with Credit, Pass or Fail is given for the course
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
