On completion of the course, the student should be able to - account for basic questions about literary theories and central concepts, and demonstrate basic knowledge of the traditional methods and theories of comparative literature - account for the historical and social conditions and functions of literature - at a basic level and from different perspectives, analyse and interpret literary texts from different times and in different genres - account for the western development of literature the earliest times until today - with good language production ability, carry a literary-critical discussion. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
CONTENTS | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Module 1: Theories and Methods of Comparative Literature I, 6 HE credits The module constitutes an introduction to literature studies as a historical and an aesthetic discipline, and provides an orientation in the traditional methods and central concepts of comparative literature. Module 2: The Art of Writing I, 3 HE credits The module constitutes an introduction to the basic concepts of writing, and a practical orientation in the shifting genres of the literature. Module 3: Literary Analysis, 6 HE credits The module is given in parallel with modules 4 and 5 and consists of exercises in literary-critical textual analysis including the bases of prosody. Module 4: Early History of Literature, 7.5 HE credits The module gives an overview of the most important periods, movements, theories and genres in the western history of literature from the earliest times until the 17th century. Module 5: History of Modern Literature, 7.5 HE credits The module gives an overview of the most important periods, the movements, the theories and the genres in the western history of literature from the 18th century to today. |

TEACHING | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The teaching takes the form of lectures, seminars, group work, oral and written practical assignments, and requires the students to be well prepared by studying independently. EXAMINATION | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The modules are examined separately through written examinations, take-home examinations and/or continuous writing and group assignments, and through active participation in compulsory parts. More information about the form and contents of the examination can be found in the course study guide. Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination. Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades. |
