AIM OF THE COURSE
On completion of the course, the student should be able to
- with in-depth understanding and from different perspectives, account for the own culture and literary-historical knowledge of chosen themes in the course
- apply a scholarly approach in academic literature studies
- independently and with developed analytical and critical ability, carry out a comparative literature study
- publicly discuss and defend a master's thesis.

Module 1-4 consists of optional literature studies in a subject that is studied independently and chosen from the existing supply of literature studies in the subject of comparative literature. Up to two of these courses may be designed individually and in consultation with the examiner to fit the student's specific interest field.

Module 5: Thesis, 15 HE credits

The module includes a compulsory seminar series, a thesis work comprising 15 HE credits and a critical review assignment.

Module 6-7 consists of optional courses for second-cycle studies that are chosen from the Master's Programme in Language and Culture in Europe or from the third-cycle programme's specialisation courses at IKK. They may also be selected from the general supply of courses for second-cycle studies at LiU or from another higher education institution/university.
TEACHING
The teaching takes the form of seminars, individual supervision and independent studies.
EXAMINATION
The optional courses are examined orally or through take-home examinations. The examination of the thesis course includes a compulsory thesis work, a compulsory critical review assignment and active participation in seminars. Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Passing grade in Comparative Literature, basic course and continuation course, and completed Comparative Literature, in-depth course with at least 24 HE credits approved (or the equivalent), including the thesis. In addition to the above, documented knowledge in Swedish and English is required, equivalent to the general entry requirements for first-cycle studies.
GRADING
A grade of Pass with Credit, Pass or Fail is given for the course
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
