AIM OF THE COURSE | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
On completion of the course, the student should be able to: - participate in simple conversation about everyday subjects in German - understand clear speech with frequent phrases and words linked to personal circumstances - absorb contents in short and simple texts and find information in materials in simple and everyday language - understand writing in subjects of uncomplicated nature, for example through simple, short messages - demonstrate basic knowledge of everyday life, society and cultural traditions in the target language area - get by in the target language in most situations that may arise when travelling in the target language area - understand clear speech, even with certain regional dialects, that concerns known circumstances and own interest fields - participate actively in conversation about subjects of personal interest or linked to everyday life - read texts with frequent vocabulary and linked to everyday life and work, for example simple literary texts - write coherent and intelligible text about well-known subject areas and about subjects of personal interest - demonstrate basic knowledge of grammatical and phonetic concepts |

CONTENTS | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Module A, 7.5 HE credits This module comprises reading, as well as oral and written communication with exercises of different kinds at a level that does not require any prior knowledge of the language. Insights are also given into the everyday life, society and cultures of the target language area. Module B, 7.5 HE credits This module comprises continued reading, as well as oral and written communication with exercises of different kinds, at a level slightly more advanced than the beginners' level, and continued studies of the culture of the target language area. Module C, 7.5 HE credits This module comprises reading of texts that are adapted to the current level, and language exercises in the form of discussion assignments, as well as grammar and writing exercises. Module D, 7.5 HE credits This module comprises reading and language exercises. This implies reading of the texts of different types, both fiction and nonfiction and discussion of the content-based and linguistic aspects of the texts. Grammar, vocabulary and different aspects of oral and written language proficiency are also trained. |

Apart from independent studies, the course includes group assignments outside scheduled time. The scheduled activities are lectures, seminars, teaching sessions and exercises. The students are expected to participate actively, both through discussions and through written and oral presentation assignments in connection with the teaching. |

EXAMINATION | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Modules A and B: Continuous examination of reading and oral language proficiency, through active and compulsory participation in the teaching. Reviews and/or written assignments on the culture of the target language. Written examination on vocabulary and grammar. Modules C and D: Continuous examination of reading, oral language proficiency and realia through active and compulsory participation in the teaching and through reviews and written exercises. Written examination on vocabulary and grammar. Detailed information can be found in the study guide. Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination. Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades. |

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus.
