On completion of the course, the student should be able to - demonstrate knowledge of the emergence of the modern European languages and modern European literature - demonstrate advanced knowledge of the German language and of German linguistics and literature - independently carry out and, in writing, present a language or literary-critical study. |

CONTENTS | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Language and Culture in Europe, 7.5 HE credits The course gives a comparative and historical overview of the emergence of the modern European languages and the modern European literature, mutual relations and special character. The relationship between linguistic phenomena and cultural and social contexts are emphasised, as well as current theorising and methodology in the area. In-depth Reading, 7.5 HE credits In-depth subject study with a focus on language, literature and cultural-scientific problems, based on text studies. Thesis, 15 HE credits Independent implementation of a language or literary-critical research assignment that is presented in an essay. The course also includes defending the own essay at a discussion seminar and reviewing another essay. |

TEACHING | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The teaching takes the form of lectures, seminars and individual supervision. Participation in such teaching is compulsory. EXAMINATION | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Language and Culture in Europe and In-depth Reading: Oral and written presentation assignments. Essay: Composition of an essay and defence of it at a discussion seminar, and review of another student's essay. Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination. Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades. |

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Passing grade in German, basic course, German, continuation course and all reading studies in German, in-depth course, each comprising 30 HE credits, with exemption for Language Proficiency, and that the essay at in-depth level is completed or that the supervisor certifies that it will be completed in a very near future. In addition to the above, documented knowledge in Swedish and English is required, equivalent to the general entry requirements for first-cycle studies. |

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus. The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed. |
