AIM OF THE COURSE
On completion of the course, the student should be able to
- demonstrate basic knowledge of research methodology and linguistic research fields,
- demonstrate advanced knowledge of a field relevant to the subject,
- independently carry out a subject relevant research assignment and present it using correct language in the form of an academic paper,
- review an essay from a linguistic and scientific perspective.
CONTENTS
The course contains research methodology, an in-depth course in Swedish and preparation of an essay.

Methods of Research in the Swedish language, 7.5 HE credits, consists of a seminar series on aims, funding and methods of research in the Swedish language. Different subject areas are covered. Proposals for subject and methodological literature for the essays are discussed.

In-depth course in Swedish, 7.5 HE credits, consists of the teaching course that is given the current semester. Examples of subject areas in which courses can be given are language history, socio-linguistics, textual analysis and linguistic structure.

Essay, 15 HE credits, consists of an independent preparation of an academic paper. The subject of the essay is decided in consultation with the course coordinator/supervisor. The course also includes publicly discussing an essay.
TEACHING
Apart from independent studies of the reading list, work with examination assignments, studies of previous research in preparation for the thesis work, and preparation of the essay, the course includes scheduled activities in the form of compulsory teaching sessions and seminars, as well as supervision.
EXAMINATION
The different modules are examined according to the following:
Module 1: Attendance and active participation in the compulsory seminars, as well as oral and written presentations.

Module 2: Attendance and active participation in the compulsory teaching sessions and seminars. Written take-home examination.

Module 3: Completion of an academic paper. Critical oral review of another essay.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Passing grade in Swedish, basic course and completed Swedish, continuation course with at least 22.5 HE credits approved (including the essay).
GRADING
A grade of Pass with Credit, Pass or Fail is given for the course
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
