AIM OF THE COURSE | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
On completion of the course, the student should - be able to account for and illustrate elements of Swedish phonology, - have acquired knowledge of the historical development of Swedish and the Scandinavian languages, - have a general knowledge of the individual's linguistic development, - have the ability to search, evaluate and present facts about certain aspects of the Swedish language its usage, - be able to formulate a scientific problem and produce a linguistically correct essay with a scientific basis, and be able to review an essay from a linguistic and scientific perspective. |

CONTENTS | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The course contains studies of language development, phonetics, language history, language in Scandinavia and preparation of an essay. Phonetics (4 HE credits) covers articulatory phonetics and the phonology of Swedish. Language History (7 HE credits) contains orientation in language history research, the fundamental features of the development of Swedish from runic Swedish to present-day Swedish, onomastics, lexicography and analysis of older texts. Language Development (4 HE credits) comprises studies of the individual's language development from phonological, morphological, grammatical, semantic, and pragmatic perspectives, language and reading, reading and writing disabilities and second language development. Scandinavian Languages (7 HE credits) covers the languages in Scandinavia and relates to Swedish and Swedish dialects from a Scandinavian perspective. Essay (8 credits) contains orientation about linguistic research methods, preparation of an individual essay about a linguistic subject and presentation and review of other essay at a seminar. |

Apart from independent studies of the reading list, studies of earlier research prior to the thesis work and preparation of the essay, the course includes group assignments outside of scheduled time. EXAMINATION | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The subparts are examined according to the following: Phonetics: Written examination Language history: Take-home examination Language development: Take-home examination Language in Scandinavia: Oral and written presentation in groups Essay: Individually prepared essay and review of another essay. Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination. Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades. |

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.
