AIM OF THE COURSE | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
On completion of the course, the student should be able to: - account for the emergence of the modern European languages and modern European literature - demonstrate advanced knowledge within a subject-relevant field - carry out a research assignment and, in correct and scholarly language, present it in an essay with clear disciplinary foundation. |

CONTENTS | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Contents of the modules Module 1. Language and Culture in Europe, 7.5 HE credits. The course comprises a comparative and historical overview of the emergence, interrelation and special character of the modern European languages and the modern European literature. The relationship between linguistic phenomena and cultural and social contexts are emphasised, as well as current theorising and methodology in the area. Module 2. Advanced Course in the Swedish Language, 7.5 HE credits. This module comprises the teaching course that is being offered during the current semester. Examples of subject areas in which courses can be given are language history, socio-linguistics, textual analysis and linguistic structure. Module 3. Thesis, 15 HE credits. The course consists of an independent completion of a research assignment, which is presented, in correct and scholarly language, in an essay with clear disciplinary foundation and specialisation. The summary of the essay should be written in English. Review of another essay is also included in the course. |

Apart from independent studies of the reading list, work with the examination assignments, studies of previous research prior to the thesis work and preparation of the essay, the course includes scheduled activities in the form of lectures, teaching sessions, seminars and supervision. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
EXAMINATION | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Module 1: Written take-home examination. Module 2: Attendance and active participation in the compulsory seminars. Written take-home examination. Module 3: Completion of an academic paper. Critical oral review of another essay. Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination. Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades. |

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Admission to the course requires a passing grade in Swedish, basic course and continuation course, as well as completion of Swedish, in-depth course, with at least 22.5 HE credits approved (including a thesis). In addition to above, approved knowledge in English equivalent to the general entry requirements for first-cycle studies is required. |

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus. The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed. |
