On completion of the course, the student should be able to - demonstrate advanced grammatical knowledge and increased language proficiency in speech and writing, - account for the Spanish language development in the world - demonstrate an increased ability to both orally and in writing discuss Spanish literature from different epochs and cultural and social situations in Spanish-speaking countries - carry out a simple study, present the results in a shorter essay and act as student reviewer and author at an essay seminar, - work independently and apply a critical work method and approach. |

CONTENTS | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The course is organised in the form of four modules, each comprising 7.5 HE credits: Spanish Grammar and Linguistics In-depth studies of Spanish grammar with practical exercises and translation. Furthermore, the fundamental features in Spanish language development are studied. The present-day social and regional aspects of the language are highlighted. General linguistic issues are covered. Spanish-Language Fiction and History of Literature Study of representative works from the 16th century to present day with an emphasis on modern literature and an overview of the history of literature of the Spanish-speaking countries after the 19th century. Culture and Society in Latin America Chosen fields of Latin-American culture and social life based on nonfiction, and information and communication technology media. Written exercises and oral presentations are also included. Essay Writing In this module, the basic method for essay writing is studied. During the course, an individual assignment comprising about 12-14 pages should be written. The course is completed with a presentation of the essay at a seminar, where the students practise thesis review and defence. |

EXAMINATION | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The course is examined through oral and written presentations, a take-home examination and a written examination. The examination is an individual effort. Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination. Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades. |
