AIM OF THE COURSE

On completion of the course, the student should be able to: - grammatical and phonetic fundamental concepts; - demonstrate, both orally and in writing, good knowledge and understanding of different aspects of the Spanish language, such as vocabulary, pronunciation, phonetics and linguistic structures; - demonstrate basic knowledge of Spanish literature and ability to discuss and analyse it based on basic literary-critical concepts; - account for the fundamental features of Spain's social structure, history, geography and cultures.

CONTENTS

The course consists of four modules: Basic linguistics Systematic overview of general as well as Spanish grammar with practical exercises and overview of the bases in Spanish phonetics and pronunciation. Literature and written production Reading and analysis of modern literary Spanish-language text. Seminars and exercises in written production are included. Culture and Society in Spain Selected parts of Spanish culture and social life are covered, based on nonfiction and information and communication technological media. Written exercises and oral presentations are included. Thematic module This module is organised around a theme that may change from semester to semester.

TEACHING

The working methods are lectures, learning supporting seminars, literature studies, group assignments and pronunciation exercises.

EXAMINATION

The course is examined through written examination, oral examination, and oral and written presentation. The examination is an individual effort. Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination. Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Specific entry requirements 2 (relevant language level 3 and Eng B). Exemption is given for Eng B.

GRADING

A grade of Pass with Credit, Pass or Fail is given for the course

CERTIFICATE

Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.

COURSE LITERATURE

The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.

OTHER INFORMATION

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus. The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
