AIM OF THE COURSE
On completion of the course, the student should be able to
- reproduce the contents of a Swedish text in a for the French language adequate way;
- analyse the French language with application of linguistic terms;
- analyse French-language literature with critical scientific approach;
- write an independent scientific work in French linguistics, literature or cultural science or in didactics and defend it at a seminar;
- relate to theory and methodology in a scholarly acceptable way;
- present a critical review of a scholarly work.
CONTENTS
The course comprises French linguistics and grammar, and French-language literature and literature studies.

Linguistics, 7.5 HE credits
In-depth and systematic study of some central parts of French grammar with an emphasis on a modern scientific view where linguistic terms are applied. Practical exercises in translation from Swedish to French.

French Literature, 7.5 HE credits
This module constitutes an advanced study of a specific literary-critical research field or problem area, or of a specific period, movement, school of thought or genre. Study of French-language texts and application of literary theory and method, based on scientific articles.

Thesis, 15 HE credits
The student carries out a scientific study in a linguistic, literary-critical, cultural-scientific or didactic field that is presented in the form of a thesis.
TEACHING
The working methods consist of lectures, learning support seminars, exercises, literature studies, supervision and essay writing.
EXAMINATION
The course is examined through oral presentation with written basis, review of a paper, defence and critical oral review. The examination is an individual effort.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Passing grade in French, basic course (30 HE credits) and completed French, continuation course with at least 15 HE credits approved, which should include the language proficiency test.
GRADING
A grade of Pass with Credit, Pass or Fail is given for the course
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
