AIM OF THE COURSE
On completion of the course, the student should be able to
- demonstrate an advanced grammatical understanding and good language proficiency in speech and writing,
- demonstrate basic knowledge of French language development,
- demonstrate knowledge of French literature from different epochs and a developed ability to discuss literature, culture and society, both orally and in writing,
- carry out a simple study, present the results in a shorter essay and act as student reviewer and author at an essay seminar,
- apply a critical approach and work independently.
CONTENTS
The course is divided into four modules, each comprising 7.5 HE credits, that can be read in parallel with one another during the semester.

The French Language

This module includes the following parts:

Language proficiency, which consists of studying French grammar with practical exercises, translation, phraseology and synonymy.

Written production, which consists of exercises in various types of written presentation.

French language history and linguistics contain a general presentation of the history of the French language in and outside France. The course also includes studies of Old French texts and an overview of basic linguistic terms and their application.

Cultural Studies

The cultural studies comprise studies of France's history and society after 1945 and studies of the French regions, as well as independent assignments on some French-speaking countries. The module also includes conversation exercises that are based on reading relevant texts and processing visual documents that concern cultural and social conditions.

Literature

The literature module comprises study of the literature history of the 17th, 18th and 19th century, as well as study of about 1500 pages of fiction from these centuries. At least one fifth of the text volume is read intensively. The texts are studied from literary, cultural and linguistic perspectives. Also included is an overview of basic literary-critical terms and their application.

Essay Writing

This module covers basic essay writing methods. An individual assignment comprising about 5-8 pages should be written during the course. The course is completed with a presentation of the essay at a seminar, where the students practise thesis review and defence.
TEACHING
The course implies full-time studies. The teaching takes the form of learning support seminars, teaching sessions, lectures, literature studies and group assignments. The student is also expected to study independently, individually or in groups.
EXAMINATION
The course is examined through written examinations, oral tests and oral and written presentations, individually and in groups. The examination is an individual effort.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Completed French, basic course with at least 15 HE credits approved (or the equivalent).
GRADING
A grade of Pass with Credit, Pass or Fail is given for the course
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
