On the successful completion of the course, students will be able to: - use their knowledge of English and American literature from different epochs, as well as study these epochs from a cultural and historical perspective, - analyse and discuss literature and other cultural phenomena, - apply their knowledge of linguistic theories and concepts, - demonstrate their knowledge of the historical development of English, - apply their knowledge of scientific method and presentation. |

The course is divided into two main blocks: Cultural & Literary Studies and Language Studies, which take epoch studies as their point of departure, to illuminate historical and cultural perspectives of language, literature and culture. Cultural & Literary Studies, 12.5 ECTS credits - Survey course of cultural history - Literature Language Studies, 6 ECTS credits - Linguistics - History of English In addition, students will write a term paper related in subject to either of the two main blocks, 4 ECTS credits |

TEACHING | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Students are expected to participate actively and constructively in seminars and tutorials. The various elements of the course run largely in parallel throughout the duration of the course, each contributing to the overall impression of an epoch and its historical setting. Scientific method and presentation will be trained in conjunction with the writing of a term paper. The course is taught through lectures, seminars, tutorials and individual supervision with oral and written feedback. EXAMINATION | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Continuous assessment of compulsory active participation in seminars and tutorials. Students are also examined by way of traditional written exams, oral exams, written take-home exams and other written hand-in assignments. Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination. Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades. |

At least one year of full-time undergraduate studies of English. Only exchange students are eligible to apply for this course. Documented knowledge of English equivalent to Engelska B/Engelska 6: internationally recognized test, e.g. TOEFL (minimum scores: Paper based 575 + TWE-score 4.5, and internet based 90+TWE-score 20), IELTS, academic (minimum score Overall band 6.5 and no band under 5.5), or equivalent. |
