AIM OF THE COURSE
On the successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- use their knowledge of and demonstrate their understanding of the social structure and everyday life of the United States and the United Kingdom, as well as analyse and discuss literary texts which shed light on these countries,
- work critically and independently regarding english literature and cultural studies.
CONTENTS
The course is divided into two main blocks: English Literature and Cultural Studies:

English Literature, 8 ECTS credits
- Analysing literary works which shed light on American and British society.

Cultural Studies, 7 ECTS credits
- Examining selected areas of modern American and British society, based on factual prose including news articles and ICT media sources.
TEACHING
Students are expected to participate actively and constructively in seminars. Both course blocks run in parallel, dealing with each country at a time. The course is taught through lectures and seminars with oral and written feedback. The language of instruction is English.
EXAMINATION
Continuous assessment of compulsory active participation in seminars. Students are also examined by way of oral exams and written hand-in assignments.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

General entrance requirements apply as well as special entrance requirements (English B/Engelska 6 or equivalent). Only exchange students are eligible to apply for this course.
GRADING
The course is graded according to the ECTS grading scale A-F
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
