AIM OF THE COURSE
On completion of the course, the student should be able to
- speak and write good English and have practical knowledge of various aspects of the English language: pronunciation, grammatical structures, vocabulary, word formation and idiomatic expressions in different stylistic contexts,
- describe and use basic linguistic concepts,
- demonstrate knowledge about and understanding of social structure and everyday life in the United States and Great Britain, and an ability to analyse and discuss literary texts that highlight these fields,
- work independently and apply a critical work method and approach.
CONTENTS
The course is divided into two main parts: a linguistic part and a part that covers culture and fiction. These parts may contain several modules:

Language Studies (15 HE credits)
- Phonetics and pronunciation.
- Oral presentation in connection with cultural studies.
- Written exercises and an essay in connection with writing practice and literary analysis.
- Systematic overview of general and English grammar with practical exercises.
- Linguistics.

Culture and literature studies (15 HE credits)
- Chosen fields of present-day American and British social life, based on nonfiction, including newspaper text, and information and communication technology mediums.
- Text processing of literary works that highlight the American and British society.
TEACHING
The students are expected to participate actively and constructively in seminars. Several of the different subparts of the course run in parallel during the course. The teaching takes the form of independent studies, lectures, seminars, teaching sessions and exercises, where the feedback is in oral and written form.
EXAMINATION
The course is examined continuously through active and compulsory participation in the seminars. Written assignments, written and oral examination in varying forms, and a final written language proficiency exam in the form of a written examination are also included.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Specific entry requirements 2 (relevant language level 3 and Eng B). Exemption is given for relevant language Level 3.
GRADING
A grade of Pass with Credit, Pass or Fail is given for the course
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
